(Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson)
Sixth Installment Of The
UFC On Fox Lives Up To The Hype
For everything that the Ultimate Fighting Championship has
been able to do to build its brand in recent Bet On Sports years, one of
the most impressive recent developments has been the rise of the UFC on Fox
events. Highlighted by this past weekend’s UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Dodson
event, which is the sixth in the series of events in tandem with the FOX
network, the UFC has taken major strides to make sure their fans are getting
the best possible product. From Anthony Pettis’ destruction of Donald Cerrone
to what very well could have been the last stand by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson
against Glover Teixeira, to the main event title fight between UFC Flyweight
champion Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson, the most recent installment of the
UFC on FOX lived up to all of the hype.
The action began with an impressive undercard that included
an incredible battle between Clay Guida and Hatsu Hioki that ended with Guida
taking the fight via split decision, which was promptly followed by TJ Grant
knocking out Matt Wiman in the opening five minutes of their online betting tilt. That
set the tone for what promised to be a strong main card, and it delivered right
off the top with Ricardo Lamas knocking out Erik Koch in the second-round of
their featherweight battle. Lamas improved to 13-2 with the win including
four-straight wins in the UFC, and there is no doubt he is on the radar as one
of the rising stars in the division.
Next up was perhaps the most complete effort of the night by
Pettis, who showed off his incredible striking ability with a knockout win over
Cerrone that took less than three minutes to pull off. Pettis’ acrobatics and
ability to shift his angles and attack are the stuff of a true champion, and
his ability to maximize his strengths in space makes him as dangerous as they
come. With consecutive Knockout of the Night honors in each of his last two online sportsbook tilts there is
no doubt that Pettis should be in line for a title shot in the lightweight
division, and it will be interesting to see how his talent is handled.
After watching Pettis dominate, the stage was set for what
was expected to be another physical affair with two strikers in Teixeira and
Jackson. Despite their standup styles, this fight actually went the full three
rounds with Teixeira eventually getting the nod via unanimous decision. While a
third-straight victory in the UFC is impressive, the bigger story may be
Rampage suffering a third-straight online sports betting loss.
It is clear that the 34-year old former champion is no longer the fighter he
once was, and this could be the end of the line.
Finally, the main event did not disappoint with Johnson
successfully defending his title for the first time, securing his
third-straight unanimous decision win. While it lacked some of the flare that
the earlier matches provided with the knockout and submission finishes, Johnson
proved that he is deserving of the UFC Flyweight championship, eliminating yet
another worthy contender from his way. For all of the latest UFC news and
